Urology Awareness Month 2024
Urology in the NHS is a surgical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, and male reproductive organs. Urologists treat a range of conditions, including:
- Urinary tract infections
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia
- Stress incontinence
- Congenital abnormalities
- Cancers
- Kidney stones, tumors, infections, and trauma
- Bladder stones, tumours, congenital disorders, incontinence, and infection
- Prostate tumors, obstruction, difficulty passing urine, and infections
- Urethral strictures and trauma
- Male reproductive organ conditions such as impotence, tumours, congenital disorders, infection, sterilisation, and infertility
Urologists perform surgery and also manage patients’ conditions medically. Urology is one of the most innovative surgical specialties, and was one of the first to routinely use “keyhole” surgery.
