International Day of Persons with Disabilities – 3rd December 2024
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on 3rd December, has been a global initiative by the United Nations since 1992. The day serves as an opportunity to foster greater understanding of disability issues, champion the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities, and raise awareness of the benefits of their full inclusion in every facet of life—political, social, economic, and cultural.
Originally known as “International Day of Disabled Persons,” the name was updated in 2007 to reflect evolving perspectives on disability and inclusion.
Each year, the observance highlights a specific theme, encouraging collective reflection and action on key challenges and opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Join us in celebrating this important day by supporting efforts toward greater inclusivity and empowerment for everyone, everywhere.
This year, the theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”.
This theme recognises the important role that persons with disabilities play in creating a more inclusive and sustainable world for all. It also emphasises the importance of the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
The theme this year reflects the current international political and policy context, in particular the Pact for the Future and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development, and the need to create momentum for achieving the 2030 Agenda. The theme seeks to amplify the centrality of the leadership role of persons with disabilities, in all of these efforts – from the global to the local.
