At The Uplands Medical Practice in Bury, Manchester, we are committed to promoting the well-being of our community. This February, we join the nation in observing National Heart Month, a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular health and encouraging proactive measures to maintain a healthy heart.

Understanding Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) encompasses a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes. In the UK, someone dies from a heart or circulatory condition every three minutes.

Risk Factors

Several factors can increase the risk of developing CVD:

  • High Blood Pressure: Puts extra strain on your heart and arteries.
  • High Cholesterol: Can lead to blocked arteries.
  • Smoking: Damages the lining of your arteries.
  • Physical Inactivity: Can contribute to obesity and high blood pressure.
  • Poor Diet: High in saturated fats, salt, and sugar.

Take Action This Heart Month

  1. Know Your Numbers: Regularly monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  2. Adopt a Heart-Healthy Diet: Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  3. Stay Active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week.
  4. Quit Smoking: Seek support to help you stop smoking.
  5. Learn CPR: Equip yourself with the skills to assist in a cardiac emergency.

Get Involved

The British Heart Foundation encourages individuals to “Go Red” for Heart Month to raise awareness and funds for lifesaving research. Whether it’s wearing red, hosting a fundraising event, or sharing information on social media, your participation can make a difference.
