Know the Signs, Check Yourself, Stay Informed

At The Uplands Medical Practice in Bury, we’re proud to support Testicular Cancer Awareness Month this April—a time to raise awareness and encourage early detection of one of the most treatable forms of cancer when caught early.

💡 Why It’s Important

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 15–45, yet awareness remains surprisingly low. Many men don’t know how or when to check themselves—and some may not realise how important it is to do so regularly.

The good news? When detected early, testicular cancer has a survival rate of over 95%. That’s why self-checks and regular conversations about men’s health are so important.

🔍 Know the Signs

Get to know what’s normal for your body and be alert to any changes. Signs to look out for include:

  • A lump or swelling in either testicle (often painless)
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • A dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin
  • Pain or discomfort in a testicle or the scrotum
  • Enlargement or tenderness of breast tissue

If you notice anything unusual, please don’t wait—book an appointment to speak to your GP. It might be nothing, but it’s always better to get checked.

🧼 How to Perform a Self-Check

Self-checks are quick and easy—just a few minutes once a month can make all the difference.

✅ Do it after a warm bath or shower, when the scrotum is relaxed.
✅ Roll each testicle gently between your thumb and fingers.
✅ You’re checking for lumps, swelling, or any unusual changes.
